Wir beginnen von einem zentralen Punkt, dem Syntagma Platz, wo sich auch das Parlament befindet, und wir gehen in Richtung Omonoia Platz. Verfolge den Weg in dieser Karte von Athen. Starting from a very central point of Athens, the Syntagma square with the Parliament, you go downtown to the Omonoia square. To realise the route just have a look in this Map of Athens. | Das Haus von Schliemann Ausgehend vom Syntagma-Platz folgen wir der Panepistimiou Strasse und als erstes sehen wir auf der rechten Seite das ehemalige Haus von Heinrich Schliemann, dem Entdecker von Troja und Mykenae. Es wurde im neoklassizistischen Stil im vorigen Jahrhundert erbaut. Heute dient es als Numismatisches Museum. |

The Schliemann´s house Starting from Syntagma Square and walking along the Panepistimiou Str. you first meet the earlier house of the famous archeologist Heinrich Schliemann, the discoverer of Troy and Mycenae. Built in neoclassical style at the end of the last century. It is used as a museum for numismatics today. |

The Ophthalmiatreion No, it is not a byzantine building! The name means the ophthalmic hospital. Also one of the first buildings in the modern Athens. |
| Die Athener Akademie Das Gebäude hat eine lange Baugeschichte von 1859 bis 1885. Nach dem Vorbild der Academie Francaise ist das kulturelle Zentrum Griechenlands mit Mitgliedern die bekanntesten Persönlichkeiten aus Wissenschaft, Kunst und Religion. |

| The Academy of Athens The building has a long construction history from about 1859 till 1885! It is used today, following the Academie Francaise, as cultural center, having the most known intellectuals and scientists of Greece as members. |

Platon and Athena Before the Academy you can see the sculptures of two of the most known ancient philosophers, Sokrates and Platon. And on two columns, just above the roof of the Building, Athena and Apollo, as symbols of wisdom and arts. |
| Vor der Universität Nach der Akademie kommt man auf den Platz vor der alten Universität.Die Koexistenz von neoklassischem und neuem Baustil ist in Athen überall anzutreffen. In der Glasfront dieses Neubaus sieht man die Spiegelung vom Lykabettos-Hügel. Davor fährt gerade ein Trolley-Bus aus den 50er Jahren! |

At the University After the Academy you come to the place before the old University. You can see there the coexistence of old and modern architecture, a fact that you will find at every turn in Athens. On the glass-front of the modern building you can make out the reflection of the Lykabettos Hill. I also pay attention to the yellow electric buses! They were manufactured in the 50s and still in use!! |

The Old University The second University of Greece (the first one being a small building in Plaka), built on 1839. Over its entrance a big mural painting of the first King Otto surrounded of the Muses. |
| Die Nationalbibliothek Zusammen mit der Akademie und der Alt-Universität bildet die Nationalbibliothek die sogenannte Athener Trilogie. Ebenfalls in neoklassischem Stil aus dem vorigen Jahrhundert, erbaut um 1887. Ein Besuch ist wärmstens zu empfehlen, sie hat einen prächtigen Lesesaal! |

The National Library The National Library is known, together with the University and the Academy, as the Athenian Trilogy. Also a neoclassic building from the last century. I highly recommend you to visit it, as it has a wonderful old interior! Built on 1887. |
| Der Lesesaal Es war keineswegs einfach dieses Photo zu machen! Die Bibliothekare erlaubten keine Aufnahmen und es bedurfte intensiver Diskussionen der "dritten Art" bis sie es zuliessen. Hier befinden sich über 1 Million Monographien und Tausende von historischen Manuskripten. |

| The Library interior Don´t think that it was easy to take this photo! The librarian didn´t allow it me and I needed a lot of persuasion of the greek way! You will find here over 1 million monographs and many thousands manuscripts partly of great historical value! |
| Der Omonoia Platz Ein zentraler Drehpunkt, wo der Verkehr nie aufhört. Leider auch Treffpunkt von Drogenhändlern. Hier werden auch die frischgedruckten Zeitungen ausgeliefert, weshalb oft grosse Menschenmengen anzutreffen sind. Die Athener sind wirklich informationshungrig! Das Gebäude auf der rechten Seite ist das Hotel "Alexander der Grosse", eines der berühmtesten von Alt-Athen. |

The Omonoia square The traffic around it never stops, day and night! Meeting point of the drug scene, but also for news-hungry Athenians, waiting to catch the first issues of the newspapers, delivered at the agencies just here. The building to the right is the hotel "Alexander the Great", one of the very famous ones of old Athens. |
